Silver linings...

Dads and daughters…

** This is a sponsored post brought to you by Gifts Less Ordinary. The opinions are completely my own. **

As Father’s Day approaches I can’t help but feel grateful that I’ve had two dads in my life… My dad was a young 19 when I came into the world and I quickly became a daddy’s girl. My mom remarried a wonderful man when I was a teenager and he accepted me into his heart just as if I’d always been his daughter… I know I am blessed to have had the chance to have two fathers love me unconditionally…

Me with my beautiful Mama and my Daddy in the 1970’s

When I was a little girl I wanted to go everywhere with my dad. We frequented places like tire shops and car repair and to this day walking into and smelling that distinctive tire smell at one of these shops reminds me of when I was a little girl and makes me smile. I used to love tinkering in the garage with my dad as he worked on projects and he’d always pretend I was a good helper even though in retrospect I was probably in the way! 🙂 I remember the joy of sitting at a stool in his workshop and I’d make creations out of my empty bubble containers  and drilling in screws and other tools to make little people… I just found joy in being with my daddy.

My wonderful stepdad with my Mama and my boys.

My stepdad was lost to us several years back due to a fight with cancer but his love stays with me… During one of his many hospital stays, he reached out to me while my mom went to get something. He held my hand and told me he was so blessed to have me as a daughter and to always believe in myself… He told me that he was so proud of the woman and mother I had become and that he just knows I will go far. How lucky am I to have been loved so much by a father who did not have to be a father to me but yet chose to….

I’d love to hear from my readers…. what is one memory you hold dear from your father?

What great ideas for Fathers Day you provided here. There are some really great picks. Myself I tend to lean toward a watch or a something hobby related.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth! They do have such lovely choices!

  5. I love the personalized pillow and especially the Daddy’s Man Cave road sign.that would be perfect for my middle son. I get my 3 sons and my sil in law some token gift from my grandchildren. Your post hit a sentimental spot. I guess I’m not quite over losing my father a couple years ago, also to cancer.

    1. Hi Gladys… I’m so sorry that you too have lost a dear father… I think it’s absolutely lovely that you help your sons and SIL celebrate Father’s Day! 🙂

      1. Gladys Parker

Thanks for your kind words! BTW, the throw back pictures reminds me of my teen years the designs and such. 🙂

        1. Your welcome Gladys! I adore finding these photographs of me with my mom and dad when I was little 🙂

  6. I love going to Mets games with my dad. He is an amazing man and I am happy to have him in my life.

    1. Thank you!! 🙂

  9. It’s so great to hear your stories about your dads. You’re definitely one lucky girl to have two dads that love you the same. Some people are less lucky, I wish you all happiness in the world for you and your family! 🙂

    1. Thank you so much Marya!

  10. My father is not in my life but I’m very happy for those who have wonderful fathers and celebrate this day! And I’m going to suggest your ideas to my friends!

    1. Thank you Corina!

  11. Your story about your two dads is so beautiful and moving. I also think you were blessed to have had such a fantastic family. My dad has been very important in my life too, but we haven’t spent much time together due to the fact that he was (and still is) a workaholic. As I child, I barely saw him and I remember longing so much to be with him, but we were three children and boys had priority over the girl to spend time with dad.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing Natalia… Childhood passes so quickly-in the blink of an eye they are grown and on their own. I’m so sorry you didn’t get much time with your dad when you were little…

  12. Very sweet blog! Good fathers are their daughters first love and you are blessed to have that love twice.

    1. Aww thank you Aditi! 🙂

  13. I love the personalised pillows <3 there are some great choices here 🙂 I love the cute outfit

    1. Hi Nina! I just adore that cute pillow too! 🙂

  14. How lucky are you to have two amazing Dads! My father and I didn’t reconnect until after my mother’s passing 4 years ago, a relationship that is awkward and strained. But I am blessed to have had amazing uncles, cousins and brothers who never made me feel like I was missing out on a father figure while growing up.

    1. Hi Victoria! Thanks so much for sharing and it sounds like you were very blessed to have a strong family that stepped in to be amazing father figures for you….

  15. My dad is super tall. I remember vividly being on his shoulders as a young girl and the thrill of looking at the world from the top. I also remember him driving all night to drive back to a hotel to get my beloved blanket I’d left behind.

    1. Aww Lara that is such a sweet memory of your dad! 🙂

  16. I absolutely afore your family photos! It’s so amazing that you’ve had two incredible dads in your life, to nurture and love you endlessly.

    1. Thank you so much Emily!! 🙂

  17. Kim

I love to hear stories about dads and daughters. I am close to my dad too. But I just love watching the bond between my husband and daughter. Those two just love each other!

    1. Aww Kim that is so sweet!! 🙂

  18. Last time I celebrated Father’s Day with my dad was maybe 2012. Since I moved back to the US in 2012, I haven’t seen my dad since. We do communicate via Facebook or Google Hangouts and I do greet him every year I do miss the bonding we had whether it be in the garage – me helping him wash the car or help him with his tools; or in the yard. Hopefully soon I can give my dad a big hug again. Hoping he’ll visit here soon or I visit him soon.

    1. Hi Kristyn! I hope you will be able to visit with your dad again very soon! 🙂

  19. I am sorry to read about the loss of your step father but I am glad you had the chance to have him in your life and of course your dad. I hope you enjoy celebrating fatherrs day together!

    1. Thank you so much Ithfifi!! 🙂

  20. I’m so glad for you that you have had such a strong relationship with both your father and stepfather. With my dad, I love when we just get to sit down and talk to each other, and I admire my dad’s work ethic. He often works so hard, both at his job and at home, without expectation of return.

    1. Hi Patricia! It sounds like you are very blessed to have a fantastic dad! 🙂

  21. You are lucky to be loved unconditionally by two great dads. That love ought to be celebrated daily. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you Msddah!

    1. Thank you Stephanie!

  24. Kayla

This was truly heartfelt. I hav walkways been a daddy’s girl and it’s always so hard to live so far from him. I love watching my husband now have that relationship with our girls.

I never got a chance to meet my grandad so I’m happy your kids at least got to meet him. Happy fathers day to all of us and to our great dads <3

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Narkis… We still miss him so very much…

  29. Tee Forever

That’s beautiful. I appreciate your perspective and life experience. It’s good that your parents were all mature enough to handle co-parenting. Great story.

  30. Thanks for sharing your heartwarming stories! I’d better hustle up and get on the Father’s Day gift patrol!

    1. Your welcome Paula!

  31. Tawnya

That’s so amazing you were able to have two great dads. Too often step-parents don’t put the same effort into children that aren’t there’s, but what really makes someone a parent is how they act, not the act of creating life.

    1. Thanks so much Tawnya! 🙂

  32. Rosey

I love posts like this… I didn’t know my dad, he passed when my mom was expecting me. It was a void for years, I finally came to peace with it. 🙂

  36. Sam

These are great gifts. I really like the personalized pillow.

This is a really sweet post. You are very lucky to have two great father figures in your life. One of my favorite memories with my dad is when he used to taking me fishing when I was little. 38. Adepoju Grace

I hate to loose anybody. I’ve lost loved ones and I know how it feels. How about your real dad? Is he still alive?

    1. Hi Adepoju … Yes it is so hard to lose a loved one. My biological dad is still alive.

  39. Dads are the best and just like you I was also lucky enough to have a real dad and a step dad. And they’re both awesome, very different but the love and guidance they gave us, and still do, will always mean the world.

    1. Hi Michelle! I absolutely agree! 🙂

  40. Lovely article, I guess I bonded most with my dad when he drove me to school every morning. I was supposed to get the bus but missed it that often that I gave up on that idea and dad was happy to go via my school on his way to work!

    1. Hi Joanne! That is a sweet memory you share with your dad! I bet you had some great talks on the way to school! 🙂

  47. I didn’t have a great dad, but we had some good moments. Mostly at the end of his life. He passed away right before thanksgiving and right after my toddlers birthday. He had been sick for years. He always tried to treat my kids better and spoil them when he had money. I knew he realized he didn’t do well when I was growing up.

  68. This made me tear up.. in a good way! I can relate to this , when I was little I went to work with my dad a lot. He was in the A/C business and I would go on calls with him and help. I Love reading your blog this, is a touching story that you’re able to share to us. Having a Dad is such a give from above and be thankful that you have one. So in this case be good to him, if you able to reach all his dreaming for you and i think thats the best gift for him and love him unconditionally also with your mom. Thank you for sharing this is so beautiful story of yours!

    1. Thank you so very much Preet! 🙂

  82. This was very sweet. Step-parents aka bonus parents can be such a blessing! The thing my father and I always shared was education. He was very serious about academics and he instilled that in me by first introducing me to books. I may not have been able to have every toy I asked for, or fast food or sweets, or expensive trips with my friends, but I was always able to go to the bookstore with him and get all the books I could carry in my little arms haha

    1. Aww that is such a sweet memory Atembe!:)

  83. Preet

Thank you for sharing this story of yours i do enjoy reading it. For me the best Father’s Day present to our that father is love them unconditionally, be good with them and achieve everything that they dreamed for you not just to him but also with your mom.

    1. Thank you Preet! 🙂

  84. Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories of your father. It gets hard, especially around the holidays. He is forever in your heart and memories.

    1. Thank you so much!

  85. Esme Sy

Having two dads in a lifetime is a different but wonderful kind of blessing. One of my closest friends is in a similar situation and she can’t be more grateful for having two loving fathers. I’ll take note of these wonderful gift recommendations, thanks!

    1. Thank you Esme! 🙂

  86. These are such great Father’s Day Pics. Love the personalization! That pillow is too cute!

    1. Thanks Christie! 🙂

  87. It’s great that you had so many wonderful people that cared about you growing up. I really like these ideas for Father’s Day presents. When our son was a baby my fiance loved when he’d wear outfits that had anything to do with dad. Now that our son is older he is making him a card and helping with breakfast. There is always a special bond between a father and child. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Aww thanks so much Nicole!!! 🙂

  88. Some people believe sons need their fathers, but daughters need them just as much if not more. These are great ideas for gifts for a special Dad.

    1. Thank you Clara! 🙂

  89. those gift options are so creative..
    well 19 is very…… young, but that’s cool 🙂

    1. Hi Jefferson… I don’t think 19 is too young… I was 20 with my first son 🙂

  90. You are well blessed. The pillow is so personal and touching. I love that each item you shared seemed well thought out and caring. It can be hard to find things for dads who sometimes appear to have everything they want.

    1. Thank you Elle! 🙂

  91. There always is a special bond between a father and daughter! Thanks for the beautiful reminder!

    1. Your welcome Cris! 🙂

  92. Nailil

These are great gift ideas. I especially like the custom pillow.

    1. Thanks Nailil! 🙂

  93. Sheree

Love this idea for fathers day, the onsie is adorable and I love all the vintage pictures, so cute!

    1. Thank you Sheree! 🙂

  94. Oh I’m so sorry about your dad. It’s nice that you remember so much of him though and keep him alive in posts like this. That just goes to show you that money is nothing but memories can last forever.

    1. Thank you so very much Lexie… 🙂

  95. It really is wonderful how families can come in all different kinds of shapes and sizes. One of my best friends growing up was blessed to have two incredible men pour love into her as her father and step-father. When she got married, they both walked her down the aisle, one on each arm! It was such a beautiful moment with so much love and support.

    1. Hi Reese! What a lovely memory your friend has of her fathers!

  96. That is the sweetest things to read, I love the man cave sign!

    1. Aww thank you so much Ina! 🙂

  97. Brianna

Thank you for sharing. I think that it is important for a daddy and daughter to have a strong bond. Happy Father’s Day!

  98. That little onsie is so cute! I love it!

    1. Hi Lydia! It is isn’t t it?!! 🙂

  99. I like the fact that your dad took you everywhere he went. Not everyone does that.

For me personally, I appreciated it when dad took me to his office. I used to sit there pretend that I’m an employee, and when mom called dad to check up on us, I used to tell her that I was busy working with dad and “making his company the best in the country.”

    I was 5.

    1. Aww Omar that is such a sweet memory! Thanks for sharing!! 🙂

  100. You are so true. Though we cannot always remember our fathers, at least a formal day brings the opportunity for us to remember them and we should avail the opportunity.

  101. That is such a cute pillow. I would get that for my dad and have it from his grandkids.

    1. Hi Luci that’s a fabulous idea!

  102. Chris

Really love the polaroid photos. I don’t know what it is, but they always instill a sense of nostalgia in me. Much more than any super high quality photo

    1. Thanks Chris! Me too!! 🙂

  103. Your post makes me so happy, such a beautiful story and read. You are lucky to have received so much love from your fathers. Great gift ideas, thank you for sharing!

    1. Thanks so much Preet!

  104. Like you, I have a dad and a stepfather, and although growing up presented its challenges, as an adult I’ve always felt so blessed to have two fathers when a lot of kids don’t have any, and most have only one. My stepfather stepped up and continues to go above and beyond, and I’ll admit, I usually find the custom gifts for step parents lacking. He has been a constant in my life since I was six, while my dad lives states away. These are super cute ideas…I love the pillow and the mixology shaker, either would work!

    1. Thanks Ashley! You sound truly blessed!

  105. Pat

Thanks for reminding me of my special dad. He died when I was only eight.

    1. I’m so sorry you had such loss at such a young age Jill…

  106. There’s a special relationship between dads and daughters that withstands the test of time.

    1. Hi Jill… so very true… 🙂

  107. Love

So touched by your story! So true we girls will never be the same without our father’s love. 😊

  108. This brought tears to my eyes. There is nothing better than a bond between a daughter and a father. My stepfather and I have always had a rocky relationship, but I know he loves me and always will!

    1. Thank you so much Amanda…
