As my regular readers know… my family is ALL about our Fandoms… We ride for Rohan, know that we’re wizards, boldly explore and always remember that The Force is with us!
You can imagine the excitement in our household when we learned the release date for the newest Star Wars film! All three of us counted down the months, days and hours till it arrived! Some may find it too geeky or nerdy for their tastes but we absolutely love it!!
I grew up a child of the 80’s and enamored of Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo. I wanted to be brave and empowered like Leia. I admired Luke. Let’s face it… I had the same crush most girls my age did on a certain Mr. Solo! (Insert random fact here, but his witty sass may or may not have influenced my choice in relationships later down the road — hahaha) Seriously though Star Wars taught me so much and affected a generation…. So much so that now we are grown with families of our own and we pass on that love and admiration to the newest Jedi’s, our children.
Seeing the eyes light up of my oldest and youngest son when they see someone yield a Lightsaber and seeing them engrossed in the characters new and old when we go to the films is so much fun. I will never forget the first time I watched the original 3 films with my oldest, David. He was 3. He. Loved. Them. He was so adorable… I helped him make lightsabers with paper towel rolls and he spent many happy hours pretending to be a Jedi.
I love sharing characters from my childhood with my boys, yet I also adore sharing the love of new characters who have taken a place in our hearts– Rey, Finn and BB8. Even, I dare say, Kylo Ren.
Two weeks ago, Boo and I were blessed with tickets to see an advanced screening of The Last Jedi tonight (Dec.14th) before its opening day tomorrow. We were super excited!! My oldest couldn’t go with us because he is at school on the East Coast but he’s planning on seeing it tomorrow!
We got to the screening 2 hours early… Yes…. 2 hours! When we arrived the theater was packed but we were lucky and found two seats near the top where Boo likes to sit. Once we had seats we saved them with our jackets and happily spent time enjoying the entertainment Harkins Theaters provided. Boo squeezed my hand and whispered… “Storm Troopers Mama!!!!” Stormtroopers indeed! We mingled with Stormtroopers, a Jedi , Hans Solo, Kylo Ren, Darth Vader and more! We had such a great time and there was such a feeling of happiness and excitement in the air….
Soon, prepped with snacks and drinks from Harkin’s tasty and delicious offerings, we settled into our seats in anticipation of seeing our heroes come to life on the screen.
As the much recognized music and wording scrolled across the screen in the opening scene, I glanced over at my little boy— his eyes big and excited– waiting to see Luke Skywalker, and I was filled with love that I can share these moments with my children. Even though my oldest is off at school, he has a love of these characters too and our fandoms are something that unite us as a family.
I will not give any details, but… OMG…. I laughed, I cried, I giggled and I wept…. Nothing was what I thought would happen but everything was more than I thought would happen. This movie was amazing and my heart was beyond bursting when in the ending credits the words,” In loving memory of our Princess, Carrie Fisher” danced across the screen. Every single person in our theater stood up and clapped as soon as we saw it… And I’d like to believe that Ms.Fisher glanced down from Heaven and nodded her approval at a movie that did this Franchise much justice….
To all my readers— May the Force be with you… and may you find ways in your own lives to allow The Force to guide you…
Wishing you all joy and happiness,
Love, The Sun Mama
