Just because....

Messes, Mishaps and Magic….

Now that Halloween is over, as we anticipate turkey with homemade gravy and green bean casserole, our thoughts are led to what we are most thankful for in our lives… Social media bombards us with lists, surveys, pins and tweets asking “What are YOU grateful for??” We are conditioned to answer by rote with all things we expect others want to hear.  This morning though, as I watched beautiful clouds dance across the sky, I realized that the storms in our lives are really the things we should be most grateful for….

Moments with my boys are my favorite blessings...
Moments with my boys are my favorite blessings…

As a single mom, life can be crazy… Sometimes the storms can outweigh the rainbows.  It’s these storms, however that bring  me the most joy in the long run… They open my heart to the beauty in life.  Almost 10 years ago my life was sent into a tumultuous storm. My husband, who I adored, had an affair with a younger woman and left me with two young boys, one of whom had special needs. I could never have imagined at the time that there would ever be a time I could feel grateful for this, but almost a decade later, I know that those events shaped who I am now…

Boy Mom
I’m so happy to be their Mama…

As time went by I became stronger than I ever knew I could be. I found strength within my heart I never knew was there. I learned to love myself and who I am. I think it helped me to be a better mother to my boys and I could not be prouder of the young men they have become… At 43, I feel a peace and comfort in my life that I am truly grateful for…and without the storms I have weathered, my heart would not be in the place it is right now. For that I am truly grateful…

So, as you sip delicious pumpkin lattes and peppermint coffees, remember to be grateful this November for all the mishaps and messes in your own life and see if you can find gratitude in the magic of healing it has brought into your life….

With love, The Sun Mama

  8. Remy

Very touching story. I wish you and your family all the best. Stay strong.

    1. Thanks so much Remy! 🙂

  9. Life is crazy and imperfect, and this is a good reminder to be grateful for what we have. Days become too hectic and it is important to slow down and savor the good times. Sorry to hear you have had some struggles, but it sounds like things have been working out.

    1. Hi Marysa… we all have struggles and troubles… but having a positive attitude makes such a world of difference in how we let those struggles affect us and and who we are…

  10. Your post pulled me right in. I’m a silver-lining person myself. Had my father not left my mom with two young girls for a younger woman, I wouldn’t have my amazing stepdad! <3

    1. Hi Colleen! Thanks so much for sharing and how wonderful for you that your were blessed with an amazing stepdad! 🙂

  11. This is a beautiful reminder to be thankful this holiday season, and always. Thank you for sharing your story about how much you’ve grown through the tough times in your life. I believe this will encourage many people to keep persevering through the trials in life, because going through them can show us things about ourselves we never knew before and give us strength.

    1. Thanks so much Lori….

  12. This is such a wonderful perspective to have – such a great way of looking at the concept of gratitude. There is the old saying: ‘what doesn’t kill you, just makes you stronger’ and I think you have developed great strength in your love for your boys and looking after them all this time.

    1. Thanks so much Nicole! What doesn’t kill us absolutely makes us stronger 🙂

  13. Belinda

What a lovely piece this is! It is so about who you are, who you have around you not what you have that makes you grateful.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Belinda!! 🙂

  14. reesa

This is such a wonderful and important reminder! Those messes and mishaps are the ones who truly mold us into who we are!

    1. Hi Reesa! Absolutely !! 🙂

  15. This is a great perspective on life’s challenges. It’s true that I’ve learned a lot and become a stronger person by weathering those storms.

    1. Thank you Nellwyn! 🙂

  16. I am grateful for family…

    1. Hi Rebecca! Family is everything….

  17. Love that you have found peace and gratitude in the life that has been given you even if it isn’t the life you would have chosen ❤️ I’m grateful for my family, for my ability to have children (I have to mention this one because it’s sometimes forgotten in the misery that is pregnancy with HG and the hardships of raising a very very strong willed little boy), and for all the gifts in my life that I sometimes overlook in the hustle and bustle of it all!

    1. Thanks so much Jamie! 🙂

  18. I’m sorry to hear about what a scary time you must have been in with two young boys. But you are truly blessed. And good for you for holding it all together.

    1. Hi Andrea…. I truly have been blessed in so many ways and am so grateful for my wonderful to boys 🙂

  19. I love this and completely agree with you. I’ve had an especially hard year and I’ve been thinking a lot of these same thoughts. My instinct is to want to get through the bad times as quickly as possible, but I’m trying to sit with the struggles, knowing that they will shape me into the person I will become. So hard to get through, but I know it will be worth it!

    1. Hi Karin! I am a huge believer in looking for the positive and although it can be hard to see the silver linings sometimes…. it is always there somewhere… 🙂

  20. I agree that we have to be thankful with both the blessings and the challenges in our lives. If everyday is just a day with rainbows, it won’t seem special anymore. And without the storms, we don’t appreciate rainbows all the more. Plus, storms and strong weather smoothen even the rough edges of a cliff by the beach. I like your perspective on this.

    1. Thanks so very much Claire…. 🙂

  21. I love your post. As a blogger I read so many posts that often look similar but this had so much heart. Men! Ugh! Haha. I’m glad you have emerged stronger from your experience. People say it often, but I truly believe it. .things happen for a reason although it’s haRd to see why at the time. Glad you made it throught the storm 🙂

    1. Hi Ching! I’m so glad you enjoyed my post and that it touched your heart! and ya… men…. LOL 🙂

  22. What a lovely post and a great way of looking at life! It’s so true that our hardest times do shape us into the people we are today – I’ll make sure to bear that in mind when a shit storm approaches!

    1. Thanks so much Gabrielle!!!! 🙂

  23. My mom always said that boys will always be mama’s. Enjoy the journey!

    1. Aww thanks so much! 🙂

  24. Even though my life can be a huge mess, I all try to be grateful. It could be much worse and I know that I am never alone. We don’t do Thanksgiving in the UK but I’d love to attend one one day!

    1. Hi Corinne!! Absolutely my life is often one big mess LOL but like you I try to be grateful for all those things that make my life me 🙂

  25. Grateful for so much here, both my son and daughter have autism and they’ve taught me a lot about myself and parenting, we don’t sweat the small stuff here 👍🏻

    1. Thanks so much Preet… I feel like life is just better with gratitude for all the aspects of our lives 🙂

  27. What a great perspective. In hindsight, I’m so grateful that last year when I was 7 months pregnant and was told we had to pack up and move. We ended up at my moms for six months, HOWEVER, I then was able to find and buy my dream home. I never would have expected that to happen, and we’re so much better off now.

    1. Hi Marie! What a blessing you were able to stay with your mom and found the house of your dreams!! 🙂

  28. Abi

This is such a wholesome post! I definitely agree you have to be thankful of the ‘downs’ to fully appreciate the ‘ups’ in life. I hope you have a wonderful day!

    1. Hi Abi! I hope you have a lovely day as well! 🙂

  30. I have so much respect for single parents. My mom was a single mom and I know it had to have been tough for a while there. I am really grateful I have my husband who has been amazing because I don’t know if I would be strong enough to do it alone

    1. Thanks Jessica! I am a firm believer that we all have more strength than we think we have 🙂

  31. Such a great message! You are right, being grateful for all our daily mess is being grateful for the uniqueness and true deep essence of our lives.

    1. Thanks Sabrina! We all do better when we are grateful for the uniqueness of our lives 🙂

  32. It’s so nice to hear that after all this time, you’re able to put your ex husband’s infidelity behind you and see it for the plus that it was. I know that at the time it would have been hard, but this post just shows how much stronger you have become because of it! Keep it up lady xx

    1. Thanks Becca…. I feel stronger and empowered but also I believe in letting go of any past hurts no matter how big or small helps us to live a much better life….

  33. Being a mom of three littles, there are messes all over! Accepting and even embracing those messes can be a way to relieve stress and take pressure off myself to “meet the standards” I often place on myself. What a great post!

    1. Aww thanks so much Karen!! 🙂

    1. AnnMarie thank you so very much!! 🙂

  54. Very apt post. I’m currently experiencing a troubled time – with my two young girls. They are driving me and the husband potty as they are just being naughty and are really grinding us down. I try to look back at the good things but in the midst of it, all I can see is chaos.

    1. Hi Rebecca…. thanks so much for sharing and I hope soon there will be good that comes from the chaos…

  116. I love this reflection! Yes, sometimes what pains us can become a blessing. My biological father abandoned my mom when me and my sister were 1 and 2. It was painful, but I am forever grateful that he decided to leave and allow us space to grow and learn from life better than we ever would have if he stayed.

    1. Hi Elisha! Thanks so much for sharing your heart with us!! 🙂

  117. The apples that have scars are the sweetest! 😉

    1. Hi Emely!!! I very much agree! 🙂

  118. The tough times in life are obviously not fun but it’s a part of life sometimes and there is so much to be learned from struggles. The tough times make the easy nice times so much more enjoyable and I think can make people more grateful sometimes too.
