My boys and I have many fandoms we LOVE…. From Harry Potter to Hobbits, from Star Wars to Star Trek…. We are passionate about them all! We can quote every line, from every book. We know there is nothing in life a Harry Potter quote doesn’t apply to… If we had magical powers, we’d be Jedi’s living at Hogwarts, using the Floo Network to reach Starfleet Academy to search for a ring… So you can imagine our excitement last year when Boo and I got to attend The Tucson Comic Con!
David, my oldest, didn’t get to go because he’s off at Cornell studying hard but Boo and I had a blast and took my ex-mother-in-law — I inherited her in the divorce 😉 We had so much fun (She’s a huge Trekkie too!) and Boo is counting down the days till this years Con! He’s super excited and has a new cosplay outfit to wear– Spock!!! We even found the ears on eBay!! He loves Pokemon so last year he went as James from Team Rocket and I, of course, was a Science Officer from the original Star Trek series.
When we walked in you could feel the excitement in the air! There was so much to see and all of our fandoms were EVERYWHERE!!! We almost didn’t know where to look first! After a quick stop in The Captains Chair and meeting some amazing and friendly people from The Star Trek Tucson Fan Club (which we would love to join!), Boo was thrilled to meet Team Rocket! I have to say that AZ Team Rocket were all so amazing and kind to Boo! They made him feel like a rock star that day! His special needs make it difficult for him to communicate but every single person we met in these groups went out of their way to make him feel awesome and important! They truly made my son have an all-star day and my heart was full of joy to see him so excited and happy! We can’t wait to go back again in just a few months!!!
After all that excitement, we had even more…we, wait for it…. got to meet Marina Sirtis!!! Boo knew she was Counselor Deanna Troi on Next Generation and held my hand tightly while we waited in line to meet her. When it was almost our turn he squeezed my hand and whispered, “Mama!!! It’s the Star Trek lady!!! She came to Arizona to see me!!” I must say Marina was just the sweetest person I have ever met and it was a joy to meet her…
Overall, we had an amazing fulfilled day and can’t wait to do it again this year! We loved meeting other cosplayers in their fun and brilliant costumes. It was a joy to spend the day with others who are obviously as passionate about their fandoms as we are.
To all my readers, I encourage you to embrace whatever it is that brings you joy and you can do with your family… Our fandoms are something that unite my boys and me and bring us happiness. We geek out together. We celebrate them together. We embrace them together.
Live Long and Prosper
