Nerdgirl Nirvana

My boys and I have many fandoms we LOVE…. From Harry Potter to Hobbits, from Star Wars to Star Trek…. We are passionate about them all! We can quote every line, from every book. We know there is nothing in life a Harry Potter quote doesn’t apply to… If we had magical powers, we’d be Jedi’s living at Hogwarts, using the Floo Network to reach Starfleet Academy to search for a ring… So you can imagine our excitement last year when Boo and I got to attend The Tucson Comic Con!

comic con
Comic Con is a great place for families!

David, my oldest, didn’t get to go because he’s off at Cornell studying hard but Boo and I had a blast and took my ex-mother-in-law — I inherited her in the divorce 😉 We had so much fun (She’s a huge Trekkie too!)  and Boo is counting down the days till this years Con! He’s super excited and has a new cosplay outfit to wear– Spock!!! We even found the ears on eBay!! He loves Pokemon so last year he went as James from Team Rocket and I, of course, was a Science Officer from the original Star Trek series.

Team Rocket!

When we walked in you could feel the excitement in the air! There was so much to see and all of our fandoms were EVERYWHERE!!! We almost didn’t know where to look first! After a quick stop in The Captains Chair and meeting some amazing and friendly people from The Star Trek Tucson Fan Club (which we would love to join!), Boo was thrilled to meet Team Rocket! I have to say that AZ Team Rocket were all so amazing and kind to Boo! They made him feel like a rock star that day! His special needs make it difficult for him to communicate but every single person we met in these groups went out of their way to make him feel awesome and important! They truly made my son have an all-star day and my  heart was full of joy to see him so excited and happy! We can’t wait to go back again in just a few months!!!

After all that excitement, we had even more…we, wait for it…. got to meet Marina Sirtis!!! Boo knew she was Counselor Deanna Troi on Next Generation and held my hand tightly while we waited in line to meet her. When it was almost our turn he squeezed  my hand and whispered, “Mama!!! It’s the Star Trek lady!!! She came to Arizona to see me!!” I must say Marina was just the sweetest person I have ever met and it was a joy to meet her…

Having fun at Comic Con!

Overall, we had an amazing fulfilled day and can’t wait to do it again this year! We loved meeting other cosplayers in their fun and brilliant costumes. It was a joy to spend the day with others who are obviously as passionate about their fandoms as we are.

To all my readers, I encourage you to embrace whatever it is that brings you joy and you can do with your family… Our fandoms are something that unite my boys and me and bring us happiness. We geek out together. We celebrate them together. We embrace them together.

Live Long and Prosper

    1. Hi Nicole! It’d be so much fun to go to Dragon Con one day! 🙂

  27. It is so awesome when our passions and our kids’ passions overlap! Great for family bonding! Ever since my kiddos were tiny they’ve been huge Disney fans, and so am I, so it was one of our first things to bond over and we still do today 🙂

  35. Elizabeth O

Reading your post brought back lots of fun memories of taking my kids to every Comic Con gathering in the tristate area. We always had fun and my kids brought home paraphernalia and memorabilia that are still lined up in their rooms…

  39. It’s unfortunate your oldest couldn’t go but it looks like you all still had an amazing time. Also I really respect you staying close with your ex mother in law. As a child of divorce, I can say it really does help when people get along.

    1. Hi Dia…. We have been blessed to have a divorce where all get along… It’s always sad when a marriage ends….It’s not the way you thought things would go…. but if there can still be peace than thats whats important… Besides… she was “Mom” for over a decade and continues to be in my heart and she’s one of my boys grandmas….:)

    1. Hi Vanessa! That would be awesome!!! 🙂

  78. I’m so happy to hear that you guys had a great time! I completely agree with you, that people should do what makes them happy! In today’s society we’re too busy worrying about ‘if it looks cool’ or what other people will think of us, but we really need to learn that it shouldn’t matter, and our happiness is more important! I’m not a Star Wars or Star Trek fan, but I do love Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Pokemon! That’s my childhood right there, and it will never get old!

    1. Thanks so much Larissa!!! 🙂

  79. I love your advice at the end about finding whatever your family can do together and have fun doing it. That’s my motto. It looks like you all have a ton of fun. Thanks for sharing!

  82. Comic Con always seems like a fun place to be and for the ‘nerds’ in the world would be able to ‘fit in’. I wish I had something like that close to me.

    1. Hi Luci! I would look around… more and more places are putting on smaller comic cons now instead of just the large ones like San Diego…

  83. you are such a fun mom!

    1. aww… thanks Tara! 🙂

    1. Hi Sarah!! It was totally awesome!! 🙂

  87. I am a huge nerd and I hope to do things like this with my son. He is still young so I haven’t tried going to the Chicago Comic Con yet. I would be too worried about him running off in the crowds. I know how busy and cramped Chicago’s Comic Con can be.

    1. Hi Ashley! This will be a fun thing for you to do with him when he’s a little older 🙂

  88. It looks like you guys had so much fun at the event. I’ve never been to anything like this before!

  90. That is super cool!! I love how you have so much in common with the kiddos, interests and all. We too, are huge fans of sci-fi flicks but have never gone to comic con unfortunately. It’ll definitely be a wonderful memory for Boo to have been able to share that experience with not only his momma, but his grandma 😉

    1. Thanks so much Cori! 🙂

  91. This looks like such a fun event! I just went to my first comic con this year because my husband designed some of the signage for the event. My 2yr old son was fascinated with the superheroes.

    1. Hi Amanda! It’s so fun for them to see all the characters!! 🙂

  92. What a fun way to get some quality family time in! Looks like you guys had a blast!!

    1. Thanks Trisha! 🙂

    1. Hi Margarette! I hope you get to go one day!

  102. Candy Rachelle

I’ve never been a fan of those types of movies. But because my older son is, I’ve had to ‘deal’ with it. But there are so many fans, they can’t be wrong, right?

    1. I think it’s totally fine not to enjoy these types of movies… We all have things we love and don’t love 🙂 Just because one person likes it doesn’t mean another has too… I’m sure you have many other wonderful movies you enjoy and love .

  103. It looks like you had a lot of fun at Comicon.

    1. Thanks so much! 🙂

  104. Wow this looks like so much fun! I’m not surprised Boo was excited to meet Team Rocket, I think I would have been too! I’m so glad you both had such an awesome time 🙂

    1. Hi Logan! You totally need to attend Comic Con!!! It is AMAZING!!! 🙂

  107. Vox

Marina Sirtis! There aren’t two better words put together! I am a Trekkie. All incarnations. I love that you and your boys bond over your fandoms (like my family bonds over movies and music). Thanks for sharing!
