Get Animated! (Arizona Science Center)

Throughout the years, my boys have always loved going to the Arizona Science Center. There are 3 stories of hands-on science exhibits that kids and adults alike can play and marvel at! There is so much to see and do when we are there! Among their regular exhibits, they host a traveling exhibit than seems to change a few times a  year. It’s a small extra entrance fee but well worth seeing the wonderful and amazing exhibits that are brought in!

science center

We have enjoyed everything from the Sesame Street Presents the Body to Titanic (complete  with artifacts!) When I saw the exhibit this summer was “Get Animated!” I just had to take my boys! Boo would absolutely love this I knew! When I told my oldest son , David-who was home for the summer from college, he couldn’t wait to go! David graduates from Cornell in May and is applying to art schools after graduation. His dream is to do storyboarding for Disney, Pixar, etc… So he was super excited to go see this traveling exhibit!!!

The Simpsons

We all enjoyed this exhibit so much! The boys loved seeing the history of animation over the years and learning the process of how an animation is developed. I adored all the “old school” cartoons and animations they had on display. I especially got a kick out of the Saturday Morning Cartoon area! Showing my age, but unlike kiddos today, my generation got cartoons on Saturday mornings! They had an awesome replica living room set up that looked exactly like I had time warped there from the early 80’s. I got a real kick out of seeing Boo sitting there watching a little TV like I would have done as a kiddo!  There was so much to see and do and of course… tons of photo ops! We learned so much about the animation process and everything from hand-drawn cells to stop-motion to CGI.

Boo was so excited to take a quick pic with the gang from Scooby Doo and we were all laughing and smiling when we found Gumby!!

Arizona Science Center

Gumby!

David enjoyed helping his little brother learn how to draw one of our cartoon faves–Bugs Bunny! We had such a wonderful and fun afternoon and it was so nice to spend the day with both of my boys!

I’d love to hear from my readers– What is your favorite museum and why? Or, if you could travel to any museum in the world, where would it be and why?  If  you live in the Phoenix area– be sure to go explore the Arizona Science Center  with your families and be on the look out for their next awesome exhibit– Pompeii-The Exhibition arrives November 18- May 28!!!

  1. looks like you all had a blast!

    1. Thanks Tia! We had so much fun!! 🙂

  2. This sounds like an EXCELLENT museum. I love museums that constantly change exhibits. That is why I love the Building Museum in DC. There are always amazing exhibits, many of them hands-on — and not just for kids. Although they are often very cool for adults AND kids. They also have a great kids play room that is so popular that you always have to get a timed entry pass. I get a little annoyed that it costs money, but only because I am spoiled by all of the free museums in DC.

    1. Hi Darlene! Sounds like there’s so much to do in DC with my son! I will have to plan a trip!! 🙂

  3. Lovely post, looking like you had a really interesting experience. I would love to visit a museum like this, I am sure my siblings would love it.

    1. Thanks Ashlee! 🙂

  4. Oh wow! This looks like fun! I’ll have to check it out if I ever make it out that way.

  5. That sounds like such an awesome place. I would love to visit! I live in Oregon and we have something like that called OMSI, I can’t wait until my son is a little older so I can take him.

  6. I’ve never thought about what my favorite museum was before! In general, I love going to museums that are very hands-on because that’s how I learn the best, and they’re a lot of fun! One time I was in Atlanta during the Bodies Exhibit, and that was pretty cool to see the human body in different stages and various levels [i.e. the body with muscles only; the body with veins and arteries only; etc.]. During this exhibition they also the Blind Exhibition going on at the same time and it was to experience life as a blind individual. I thought I would be able to see shadows or at least something when they started to dim the lights, but no…it was so dark I didn’t know if my eyes were open or closed. It was a life-changing experience! I would recommend it to anyone hands-down!

    1. Hi Larissa… those both sound like such amazing experiences!!!

  7. What a fun trip! The closest thing to something like this is the children’s hands-on museum. and that’s not nearly as cool as this place!

  8. Awesome photos! Spending time with our kids is really priceless!

I love anything about Titanic and Harry Potter! I’ve watched them a million times! I hope to see museum exhibits of them someday. There’s none here yet in the Philippines.

    1. Hi Dae… if you ever get to the States, you would probably LOVE The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Florida! We loved it there!!

    1. Hi Erica! I totally remember sitting eating my cereal watching cartoons 🙂

  16. We have the Ontario Science Center over here in Toronto, Canada. My kids love going, so many hands-on activities and learning experiences. That animated area looks really cool, though. We do not have one of those!

    1. Hi Gayle! The animation bit was a traveling exhibit… maybe it will come your way? 🙂

  22. I love going to museums! Even more so if there is a science theme being exposed. Since I was very little I enjoyed learning different things that were not specifically required for school; and museums gave me that. They also awoke my passion for science. I definitely plan to take my kids in the future (whenever I have them haha). Thank you for sharing your story!

    1. Thanks so much Carolina!! 🙂

  23. Amazing, can I just say that even if its a cartoon I’m jealous you got to see the simpsons famous couch and have a picture making it look like you guys got to sit on.

    1. Hi Cia!! I was totally excited to see this even though my youngest has no idea who or what the Simpsons are LOL….

  28. This looks like such an amazing place! So interactive. The last time I was in the United States, I celebrated my 7th birthday. My goodness – 3 decades now gone. I’m definitely putting this on my bucket list 🙂 We have a number of local museums where I’m from – Wellington, New Zealand. The most well-known one is the Te Papa Museum which features different exhibits for different ages throughout the year. The best part is that it’s totally free and the children learn so much. The most recent feature was one of vintage dairies (like small suburban convenience stores) – really takes you back in the time. The kids loved it.

    1. Hi Melissa that sounds like such a lovely museum to visit!! I will have to put that on my list for when we plan our trip to Hobbiton!
