Summertime Snow Day….

Summer in The Valley of the Sun, is always a challenge…. Growing up in Pismo Beach… all summer was spent outside digging our toes into the sand and riding boogie boards over wave after wave…. but my kiddos are Arizona born and bred and most of their summers involve finding the quickest way to cool down indoors.  We try to hit the pool by 7am most days and then find fun indoor activities the rest of the day.  This summer however we were treated to Winter in July at the Phoenix Zoo!

Boo has been asking me to take him to play in the snow for quite some time…. I’m not comfortable (safety) wise driving my car to Flagstaff during the snow season so we haven’t really gone up to have a snow day since his dad left. When I heard the Phoenix Zoo was having a snow day I couldn’t wait to take him!!!

Snow Day!
Snow Day!

Boo was thrilled looking for his winter gloves and couldn’t contain his excitement about going!! We packed up a picnic lunch to take with us and  headed on over bright and early! The snow event started early in the morning and I figured we needed to get there first thing before it started melting.  As we turned into the parking lot, Boo was anxious and excited to get into the Zoo. He was all smiles as he grabbed mama’s hand as we walked thru the parking lot!

After a quick stop on the entrance bridge to admire turtles and fish…. We were in! The summer heat was already decending and the slight humidity in the air was sticky…  We walked a little way into the zoo then we saw it! Boo’s eyes lit up with excitement as he squeezed my hand and said , “Look at ALL that snow Mama!!!!!!”

Snow Day!
We had such a fun day!

I can not thank The Phoenix Zoo  enough for this fun and amazing summer activity! The area all round the snow zone was icy cold and felt deliciously perfect! We spent almost 3 hours playing, making snowballs and building little snowmen!

Snow day!
Building a snowman!

Seeing the laughter and happiness on all the kids (and adults) faces was priceless…. Everyone had such an amazing and fun time! It truly was magical having this moment in the middle of our 115 degree summer.

snowy day
Enjoying the coolness!

All of the animals were also treated to a special snow day, but honestly after we left the haven of the snow area, it was just too hot and sticky to go around looking at the animals…. ( We will definitely be back in the fall! )  We did get a chance to admire the giraffes but then Boo was ready for his picnic.

Winter in July
Boo loves to see the giraffes !!

We found a spot in the shade and as I was getting out our food I looked across the table and saw Boo was giving his lovey a drink 🙂 I had my phone near by and snapped a quick pic…

Snow day!

Boo adores all his stuffed animals and I’m sure my readers notice he has one in his hands almost every photo we take . They bring him joy and I don’t mind they tag along with us everywhere …

Winter in July
My happy Boo 🙂

After a light lunch we happily headed out to head home and I was treated to a very excited little boy telling me all his fave parts of the day on our way home 🙂

I’d love to hear from my readers… What is one thing you got to do this summer that brought you joy?

  1. Kim

This looks like so much fun!! So glad you guys had a good time 💖🍵

  2. What a fun idea! We’re in Texas so we understand the crazy heat!

    1. Hi Claudia! I have some family up in the Dallas area and it gets so crazy hot there!

  3. I live in dubai and we have snow only indoor, no chance to produce it long enough outdoor

    1. Thank you for sharing 🙂

  4. I’m so glad your son was able to enjoy the snow. When I read you lived in Phoenix I figured that you wouldn’t be able to play in it for very long. It’s nice that he was able to spend so much time playing in the snow. It’s pretty cool that zoo did this in the middle of summer.

    1. Hi Megan! It was such a fun outing for us and the other families! Everyone had such a great time! 🙂

  5. Alice Boswell

Your boy looks so happy playing with the snow. Summer means swimming time for me. It also means most of the swimming pools are packed already.

    1. Thanks Alice! He was so excited to be there! 🙂

  6. This is so neat! Would you believe we just did this exact thing at the Philadelphia Zoo?! Glad you guys had as much fun as us.

    1. Thanks Jordan! 🙂

  8. That sounds like a wonderful day out! What a great idea from the Zoo. How exciting to have snow!! I love how happy your son is in the pictures.

I can’t believe that you have to go into hiding during the day because of the heat. It gets hot here in Sydney but not that hot often, it must be stifling!

    1. Hi Michal! It does get pretty hot and stifling here… makes it hard to do many outdoor activities after the morning here…. This summer , on my birthday , we hit 122 degrees….

  9. What a cool activity! I’ve never heard of anyone doing this around here so I’m super jealous! It looks like you all had so much fun.

    1. Thanks Jamie!! 🙂

  10. We need this where I live in Florida! Look like a BLAST. 😀 How fun!

    1. Thanks Shelby! …. this would be totally awesome in FL in the summers there! 🙂

  15. What are the other things to do in Phoenix during the summer? I hear it gets pretty hot there in the summer.

    1. Hi Vinil 🙂 We usually go to the pool for a few hours early in the morning then there’s all sorts of indoor things to do to keep cool…. luckily Phoenix has so many awesome museums to explore we could visit one every week of the summer and never run out of options 🙂

  16. Sarah

This is so cool! I wish they did this where we live! My kids would love this. What a great way to cool off during the hot hot summer months 🙂

    1. Hi Sarah! This was totally awesome!!! 🙂

  17. This is just a cool idea! I would totally go there if I would be closer

    1. Thanks Stefanie! 🙂

  18. Wow, that sounds like SUCH a neat idea! How cool is that? Thanks to my being stuck on the couch all summer this year with a broken foot, we didn’t do a whole lot for summertime fun, but we DID make it out (finally!) to a minor-league ball game last week…

    1. Hi Flossie! I’m so sorry to hear about your injury! It must have been so nice to go that ball game! 🙂

  19. Playing with snow looks fun! I love the photos too!!

    1. Thanks Safia! 🙂

    1. Hi Marie! I think it we were so excited because snow is such a novelty for us 😉

  32. We used to live in Phoenix and loved the zoo! So cool!

    1. Hi Becky!!! We love the zoo too! (but mostly in the fall, winter and spring LOL 🙂

  33. That looks like so much fun! I’m from Western New York so snow is definitely NOT something I want to see in the summer. I’d actually love to move to AZ but I’d have to convince my family to come along, haha.

    1. Hi Andolina! It’s awful hot here in the summers but the rest of the year its just perfect!! You should get your family to visit here with you in the fall or winter 🙂

  34. I’ve only driven through Arizona but it looked like a rugged and beautiful state. I really want to go back to the Sedona area, I think I would love to stay there for a vacation. 1. Hi Elise! Life is definitely an adventure 🙂

  38. What a fun thing to do in the middle of summer! I love going to the zoo with my little one, but it was way too hot to go much over the summer, so I’m hoping it cools off enough in the next few weeks that we can make it there!

    1. Hi Trish! I hope it cools off soon and you and your little one can enjoy your zoo! Boo and I love to picnic at the zoo in the fall and winter 🙂

  39. How awesome! It’s great that kids who don’t normally get to experience snow can get a feel for what it’s like. We are forecasted to get 55+” this winter…I’ll try to send you some! LOL

    1. LOL Amanda! That’s a lot of snow 🙂 My oldest goes to school in upstate New York so his first winter there was interesting… The first snowflakes,my Arizona boy called home “Mom! Snowfall!!!!” Then a week later, “Mom… Still snow….. ” 🙂

    1. Thanks so much! 🙂

  51. I live in the SLO area. How funny! This sounds like an amazing activity for kids and a fun way to experience the snow.

  76. I love a (fake) snow day! Looks like a great time 🙂

    1. LOL! Thanks Christine! 🙂

  77. How cool! That is how I’d rather see snow rather than living in it lol.

    1. Thanks Danielle! 🙂

  78. Yolanda

Such a great event! I can’t believe they do this in the middle of the summer and that snow doesn’t melt in minutes. What fun.

    1. Hi Yolanda! It was almost magical with all this snow! 🙂

  79. I can imagine the coolness was a relief in 115 degree heat. I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, but how did they do that? Similar to a snow machine for skiing? It seems like it would melt really fast!

    1. Hi Karla… I don’t really know how they do it…. It was all set up when we got there …. and so much of it! Just tons and tons of snow! 🙂

  80. This sounds like such a fun day! I always love when places do a snow day during summer. My old uni used to do a snow day at the start of term and it was always so much fun! Looks like Boo had a blast!

    1. Hi Stephanie! Boo was so excited to go be a part of this! He had such a great day!! 🙂

    1. LOL Ryan!!! 🙂

  95. Nat

It must be so much fun to have a snow day in August! Not so much in winter though 😉 I don’t like winters…

    1. Hi Nat! It was so much fun for a hot summer day! 🙂

  96. How cool! We don’t have anything like that up here in Michigan (probably because we get plenty of the real stuff!). Very neat that everyone gets to experience snow.

    1. Thanks so much!! 🙂

  97. That looks like so much fun! I’m sure it was such a treat! We live in MN, so we’ve all seen plenty of snow, but I think even my snow bunny kiddos would love to see snow in the summer.

    1. Hi Kristin! It was absolutely a treat for these Phoenix kiddos 🙂

  98. The only thing that I did this summer was redecorating my bedroom 🙂 I am waiting for the autumn season to start travelling and make it up for my lost summer.

    1. Hi Elena! I love redecorating rooms in my house!! I re did my bedroom in the spring with a beach theme and I totally love it!

  99. Wow it looks so much fun and enjoyable place for kids in hot summers.

    1. Thanks Minakshi!

  100. What an incredible experience for both of you! Our city puts on a snow day once in a while, and I love to give the kids a taste of what it’s like in cooler climates.

    1. Thanks! It really was such a fun experience for the kiddos!! 🙂 … and us grownups too 😉

  101. We will gear up for the real thing around here in the next couple months.

    1. Hi Rachel 🙂 For these Phoenix kiddos…. this is the closest some of them will get to snow 🙂 my oldest son goes to college in upstate NY and no longer has any thrill for snow….

  102. Sounds like a whole lot of fun. Here in Vienna we get enough so and get so excited when we have a day off work for Snow days.

    1. Hi Sheri! Snow days must be great! When I was a kiddo in California they would sometimes call off school for fog days…. we loved it LOL!

  103. This makes me miss living in Phoenix so much! Such a cool thing to do!

    1. Hi Emily! It was such fun!

  104. A zoo trip is always a perfect way to spend a Saturday. My kids love seeing all the animals.

    1. Hi Katie! We love it too 🙂

  105. Winter time is my families favorite time! We are thankfully wrapping up a super hot summer here and entering some cooler weather. Your local zoo is amazing though to put on such a fun event in the midst of a warm day!

    1. Thanks Marlene! We had a blast here! 🙂

  106. Wow, what a neat event! We’re used to real snow days here in Maine, but I’ve never heard of a snow day in the summer. That was an innovative idea on the organizers’ part. I wonder how many people experienced snow for the first time!

    1. Hi Dr. K! I’m sure for lots of Phoenix kids this may have been their first time seeing snow ! 🙂

  107. This is great. We have something simular here in winter in the city to let people experience ‘snow’ its so much fun!!!

    1. That is so great! Snow days for kiddos who normally don’t get to see any is so amazing!! 🙂
