Summer in The Valley of the Sun, is always a challenge…. Growing up in Pismo Beach… all summer was spent outside digging our toes into the sand and riding boogie boards over wave after wave…. but my kiddos are Arizona born and bred and most of their summers involve finding the quickest way to cool down indoors. We try to hit the pool by 7am most days and then find fun indoor activities the rest of the day. This summer however we were treated to Winter in July at the Phoenix Zoo!
Boo has been asking me to take him to play in the snow for quite some time…. I’m not comfortable (safety) wise driving my car to Flagstaff during the snow season so we haven’t really gone up to have a snow day since his dad left. When I heard the Phoenix Zoo was having a snow day I couldn’t wait to take him!!!
Boo was thrilled looking for his winter gloves and couldn’t contain his excitement about going!! We packed up a picnic lunch to take with us and headed on over bright and early! The snow event started early in the morning and I figured we needed to get there first thing before it started melting. As we turned into the parking lot, Boo was anxious and excited to get into the Zoo. He was all smiles as he grabbed mama’s hand as we walked thru the parking lot!
After a quick stop on the entrance bridge to admire turtles and fish…. We were in! The summer heat was already decending and the slight humidity in the air was sticky… We walked a little way into the zoo then we saw it! Boo’s eyes lit up with excitement as he squeezed my hand and said , “Look at ALL that snow Mama!!!!!!”
I can not thank The Phoenix Zoo enough for this fun and amazing summer activity! The area all round the snow zone was icy cold and felt deliciously perfect! We spent almost 3 hours playing, making snowballs and building little snowmen!
Seeing the laughter and happiness on all the kids (and adults) faces was priceless…. Everyone had such an amazing and fun time! It truly was magical having this moment in the middle of our 115 degree summer.
All of the animals were also treated to a special snow day, but honestly after we left the haven of the snow area, it was just too hot and sticky to go around looking at the animals…. ( We will definitely be back in the fall! ) We did get a chance to admire the giraffes but then Boo was ready for his picnic.
We found a spot in the shade and as I was getting out our food I looked across the table and saw Boo was giving his lovey a drink 🙂 I had my phone near by and snapped a quick pic…
Boo adores all his stuffed animals and I’m sure my readers notice he has one in his hands almost every photo we take . They bring him joy and I don’t mind they tag along with us everywhere …
After a light lunch we happily headed out to head home and I was treated to a very excited little boy telling me all his fave parts of the day on our way home 🙂
I’d love to hear from my readers… What is one thing you got to do this summer that brought you joy?
