Just because....

Grocery Store Confessions

We all need groceries. We all shop for them on a regular basis, but today I realized as I was shopping with my son that I am guilty of several grocery store confessions that I hope at least some of you can relate to… 🙂

The biggest fib I tell when shopping is that when I take a sample ( no matter how nasty it is) I tell the demonstrator that we’re going to buy it. I will even ask where the item is located to further the deception. I have no idea why. Maybe I have some deep seated need to please people. Maybe I just don’t want to  hurt someones feelings– they are there, standing for hours handing out sample after sample–it just seems kind to let them feel they have a new believer in their product…

Like many other people, I’m sure, I have a thing about taking a product from the back of a shelf. My thing at Costco is taking the eggs from the middle of the pile–humongous, Costco sized pallet of stacked eggs… Honestly, it’s like playing a game of Jenga everytime I go there and I’m amazed I have not yet heard the crashing sound of eggs shattering as I attempt to gather our breakfast staple.

“Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.”

I’m a cart judger… Sigh…. Sad, but true. Now, my own cart is not always ideal either… We have had our share of Oreos and boxed cereals. For the most part, I try to shop healthy for me and my kiddos. I worry about my sons becoming diabetic like me and with my youngest son having special needs, the foods that go into  his body are a big concern for me. I try to make healthy choices most of the time, but those undesirable foods sometimes sneak into our cart. I think everything in moderation is ok but that doesn’t stop me from judging the items the innocent shopper in front of me puts on the conveyer belt… At  least there are a few of those items in my own cart giving the person behind me the chance to judge my cart–I’m an equal opportunity grocery judger! 🙂

My last grocery store confession involves carts. When our bags are in  the trunk, I shove the cart  to the side. I leave just enough room to squeeze my little car out of its spot without hitting it… I almost never take the time to  haul it back up to the little harem of carts in front of the store. I rarely take the time to return my lonely cart back to its little corral of safety where its brethren of used carts await the trip back to their home. The exception is if anyone, and I mean ANYONE, hahaha, is within eyesight of me or if I lock eyes with someone I feel obligated to do the right thing and return that cart where it belongs…

I can’t be alone in my grocery store mishaps… at least I hope I’m not! I’d love to hear from my readers: What are your shopping confessions?

Today is a good day!

  1. My grocery store confession would be that because I’m so sick and tired of coming home with food that’s ready to expire in a day, I’ll reach to the back of the milk and get the best expiration date I can find. I Always do this for bags of spinach too!!

    1. Hi Nicole… I know how you feel! I get so frustrated at that… I’ve found the best deal on spinach and it stays fresher longer, is Costco…

  2. Mal

Love the honesty! Made me laugh.

    1. Thanks Mal!! 🙂

  3. I am right there with you with the grocery cart thing. I actually try to park near a cart return thing so I don’t have to walk. But if not, I’m not going to walk down the parking lot, away from my kids in the car, to return it!

    1. Hi Sarah! Glad to know I’m not alone 🙂

  4. This is a great article.I definitely know what you are talking about.

    1. Thanks Corina! 🙂

  5. I confess that I’m a fruit thief!

Sometimes the kids are just LOSING it in the produce section and so I hand them a banana. I TRY to remember to pay for it, haha, but sometimes we forget and I don’t remember until we’re in the car. And then what am I going to do? Get my three kids back out of their carseats to go give a quarter at the register? haha!

Sometimes we just gotta do whatever it takes to make it through the trip!

    1. LOL Christine!!! I can totally relate!!! 🙂

  6. I take items and give them a ride in my cart for a half an hour or so. Later I decide I don’t really need the item so I put it on a shelf. I am too lazy to properly put it back and I always put perishable items in places where they will not go bad.

Someday I will be in need of a job and apply to Fred Meyers or some place like that and I will run into people like myself. Dang I need to stop relocating merchandise.

    1. LOL Sara! That’s why I keep finding random items on the shelf… 😉

  7. amber b

that’s so funny, I do the same thing with demonstrations. That or if its busy I just quickly walk away…lol

    1. Sometimes I do that too Amber 🙂

  8. I always tell the food demo workers the same thing! I’m guilty of asking where something is located to sound extra interested too (even though I’m sure they don’t care whether I buy it or not). 🙂

    1. Hi Carrie!!! I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who does this 😉

  9. You leave your carts running wild in the parking lot?! That’s terrible! The place where my mom shops actually has carts that lock together and you have to give them a quarter to unlock one. (You get quarter back when you put it back.) Cart judging, however, is practically a moral duty.

    1. Hi Rika! I’ve never seen carts locking together before! What a awesome idea!

  10. I love this! Do you ever put a refrigerated item back in the frozen section because you’re too lazy to put it back in the right place? I’ve done that. I usually have the kids with me so going out of the way is more of a chore. I always do it with a bit of guilt for the person who has to put it back in the right place! Great post and made me laugh. I love it!

    1. Hi Grandi! I’m so glad you enjoyed my post! 🙂

  11. This is so funny. I have occasionally left a cart by the car as I drive away *averts eyes.* 🙂

    1. LOL Carly! We are kindred spirits! 🙂

  12. I always choose the milk cartoons from the back as they have a longer use by date, but I hate it when there are trolleys blocking the parking spaces and you have to get out of your car to move them when you want to park your car in that spot.

    1. Hi Nayna! I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who grabs from the back 🙂

  13. Okay.. I have to confess something. I’m the one that hid the last icecream. I didn’t want anyone else to get it before I got my wallet.

    1. LOL Joseph!!!! 🙂

  14. Guilty on the first two charges. I just feel that the stuff that’s about to expire gets shoved to the front and I’m sorry but I want my stuff to last a while and not have to eat it right away so prevent it from going bad, lol.

    1. Me too Cori! 🙂

  15. Haha, I love this! I am guilty of ALL of the above, especially the ‘yeah I’m totally going to buy this now – what aisle can I find it in’ just to score some free samples!

    1. Hi Kristin!! I’m glad I’m not the only one LOL! 🙂

  16. Hahaha this is excellent. I don’t do a lot of those things but I do feel that obligation to putting the cart back anyone is near me haha

    1. LOL Jennifer 🙂

  17. I definitely act like I’m interested in the sample sell products but know deep down that I have no interest. Guilty lol great post

    1. Thanks Nahdia! 🙂

  18. Haha! This is too funny! I also shove my cart to the side. It is mostly because at that point my kids are already buckled into their seats and I dare not leave them in the car alone! (Florida summer = 100 degree + car temperatures!) But to make myself feel better, I often bring in a cart (especially since that keeps me from having to carry 2 kiddos into the store!)

    1. Hi Alex!! I think bringing a cart in totally balances the whole thing out 😉

  19. My grocery confession is that I sometimes go on the express line with a little bit over the 15 max item and pass through anyways. Ain’t nobody got time for those overstuffed carts!

    1. LOL Emely I do that too!! 🙂 I hate when I’ve only got like 20 items and the person in the only other checkout lane has like 2 carts filled to top…

  20. Nida

My shopping confession!! I shop irrelevant items more than what i need 😕 !! Love reading ur post !! Atleast you have guts to speak out

  21. When I shop for sliced bread, I normally get the ones at the very back/end then I compare the expiration date with that in the front.

    1. Hi Jackie! Me too 🙂

  22. I’m totally a cart judger. I try so hard not to but I definitely feel myself looking to see what others are buying.

    1. Hi Aly 🙂 Glad I’m not alone LOL 🙂

  23. Jessica

I just love how honest and raw this is! I feel like I wrote it! Greta job!

    1. Thanks Jessica!!! 🙂

  24. What an awesome post. If I were to write a confession, it’d be soooo long! I can’t even start ranting. LOL

    1. LOL! Thanks Ophelia!

  25. I do the same thing about asking food demonstrators where items are located! They aren’t usually that invested in the product and it’s a total song and dance. I also check expiration dates and always pick the freshest stuff.

  26. I leave kids with my husband after two or three funny incidents. Infact My Sonny Boy unknowingly broke a Big Pot in the store. And We were so emarassed and he too started crying in fear. But these are memories as well. I loved reading the post

    1. Thanks Jiya 🙂

  27. I don’t really do above but what I feel guilty about when going to grocery is the junk foods. I tried to be healthy but I just can’t resist it. So, I don’t usually go and buy. I let my mom buy groceries for me most of the time. 🙂

    1. Hi Jenn! Junk food can be tempting…

  28. This made me giggle, because now I know for sure I am not the only one…lol!!

    1. LOL Maranda! I’m so glad you loved my post! 🙂

  29. Oh, gosh, that’s funny! Thanks for putting a smile on my face! 🙂 As a fellow people-pleaser, I’ll confess that I don’t lie outright and say “we’ll buy it” – I say “I’ll have to think about getting that next time, once we clear out some freezer space” (for big frozen things at Costco) or “I’ll have to check with my husband and have him get some” (since he does most of the cooking) for things like sauces etc. (explaining that he’s the one who cooks!)

  30. Whenever I buy a canned drink or a drink at all, I usually drink em before I get to the payment desk

    1. Hi us too… I’m constantly having the cashier ring up empty drink containers my son already finished 🙂

  31. Besties Notepad

    Oh my God! Hilarious 😃
I am guilty of almost everything mentioned above, specially picking things from the middle of shelves..I feel the ones in front are the display items and should be on sale probably (Like in a furniture shop 😛)

    1. Hi! I’m so glad you loved my post 🙂 🙂

  32. I always take the perishable products from the back so I have longer before they expire and I’m guilty of giving a stink eye to people who don’t put their cart back..LOL For sure every time my car is the one that gets nailed with a runaway cart!

  33. LOL, I laughed out loud at your egg confession. I’m the same.. I don’t take anything off the top of the pile! I’m not sure why, I just feel like what’s down below or further behind in the stack is much better!

    1. Thanks Katie!! 🙂

  34. Haha this made me laugh. My confession: everytime we go to the grocery store my daughter sneaks grapes and mushrooms!

    1. Hi Shelby! Glad I made you smile! 🙂

  35. I try to bring a cart with me from the parking lot into the store…that way I don’t feel so bad when I leave it there again later. Then I feel like I left the parking lot no worse than it was before I got there 😉 Ahhh, the lives we tell ourselves. Haha!

    1. hahaha I love it!! 🙂

  36. Jenn JG

The worst is when the “unhealthy” snacks are buy one get one free… than you can really do some serious cart judging on me. I don’t know I just feel like I cant pass up the deal even though I know me and my kids really could go without the oreos or chips or whatever else i seem to pick up

    1. Hi Jenn!! I totally understand… when I see those deals it seems to be the time I’m like… well… ok… 🙂

  37. This was very entertaining to read. I am guilty of not returning the cart. but I usually have a cart full of kids and don’t want to leave them in the car to do so. Fun read:)

    1. Hi Audria! I’m so glad you enjoyed the read 🙂

  38. Such a funny post! I too am a serious cart judger! “Where are the fresh veggies and fruit?” It’s a horrid habit, especially because I often pick my fresh produce up in one store and then hit the grocery store for the rest, giving other cart judgers lots of good reason to judge me too!

    1. Hi! I do that too…. get my veggies at one store and everything else somewhere else 🙂

  39. Haha! I totally do this with samples too. Sometimes I really love them. Other times I’m just hungry!

    1. Hi Rachel! I think sometimes I’m just super hungry too 🙂

  40. Great post! Lol! So I always seem to open a box of fruit snacks in the grocery store, my son will go into a frenzy and to hush him up, I open up a nice bag of “be quiet please” fruit snacks! I hate that I open things in the store but hey sometimes you have to do what you have to do! lol.

    1. Thanks Cheridan!

  41. I wanna go shopping with you because we can lie to sample lady’s a judge carts together 😉 I can’t help it either, I see someone with a head of broccoli and a jar of peanut butter ONLY I can’t help but think “wth are you cooking?” lol

    1. LOL Jasmine!! 🙂

  42. I confess that I actually love shopping for food. Just not at Costco. I hate Costco. lol. I’m the person in the parking lot that hates everyone who doesn’t put their cart away. My mom always did with four kids and she would kill me if I didn’t put my cart away even as an adult.

    1. Hi Nicole! I love Costco but only on weekday mornings when its not a crazy busy zoo 🙂

  43. You are a hoot and your post is hilarious. My confession is I always pick a smaller cart or a basket hoping I would pick fewer things and I seldom fall for my trick. I end up having to go all the way back to change carts. Sigh.

    1. Thank you Gayathri!! 🙂

  44. Your post is really interesting. I also do the same with those who gives samples at somewhere in malls.. Its so Entertaining read. Thanks for sharing.

  45. Lee

I think my only shopping confession is that I barely do it lol. I hate grocery shopping since I had my 2nd child. Too many food aversions in my family and nobody likes anything!! So I avoid it.. 😬

    1. Hi Lee! We have a lot of food allergies in our house too… 🙁

  46. Hahahha…I think I am guilty of most of the things you mentioned except the cart. In Dubai, you need to insert a coin while taking a cart and then you can take it out when you return it at the parking so I never forget to keep it back. 😉

  47. If the kids are in the car, the cart just goes to the most convenient spot, lol.

    1. I hear ya Emily!! 🙂

  48. Love this post!! Its so funny to see what others are thinking when they are grocery shopping. My confession has to be that I am SO BAD about bringing a list of what I need. I am an aisle walker and will literally just pick up stuff that looks good and that I think I might cook for dinner. Often when I get home, I realize that i bought a bunch of groceries but will not have all the ingredients needed to make one complete recipe. Oops!!

    1. LOL Brittany I do the same thing! I need to be better about writing lists 🙂

  49. Thank you for your honesty. My confession is that I always try to grab items with the latest expiration date on it, so that it lasts longer.

    1. Hi Patricia! Me too 🙂

  50. Alyssa

I am usually juggling a baby and a toddler so no the cart does not end up back in the spot most of the time!

  51. I have no Groceries confessions because simply I am not the one who does grocery in my house. My husband does. Lol I am terrible at this!

  52. My grocery store confession is that I always open the applesauce pouches and let my kids eat them while we shop…I mean, I always pay for the empty box, but I still feel a little guilty!

    1. Hi Skye! Don’t feel bad! I often let Boo open something to snack on and then pay for the empty package when we go thru the line 🙂

  53. I wish I had a confession but I order my groceries online or have them delivered. I spend less on junk and enjoy the convenience. What irks me is when people don’t put there carts back; my car has taken a toll on behalf of other people’s laziness. IF I go to any store and use a cart, I always put it back where it belongs.

    1. Hi Danielle, I’ve heard a lot about the new grocery delivery popping up everywhere …. I will have to give it a try! 🙂

  54. I sort through items to find the best expiry. That’s just smart shopping!

  55. Cart judging!! I try so hard not to but I’m always eyeballing other people’s carts… sometimes it’s to be inspired! This was such a fun post.

    1. Thanks Sarah!! 🙂

  56. Your post made me laugh! I do so many of the same things. I ALWAYS ask where the sample items are located! I have no idea why I do it either! 🙂

    1. LOL Thanks Jen!! I’m so glad you loved the post 🙂

  57. I always take items from the back of the freezer, fridge and shelves. I barely pay attention to anyone at the store and often hope not to see anyone I know so I can get in and out quickly.

    1. Hi Elise! I try to get in and out of the store as fast as possible too 🙂

  58. If I decide I don’t want something I leave it wherever rather than wait until I’m up with the cashier or return it to it’s proper place…unless it’s perishable, then I leave it in a different cooler at least.

  59. I NEVER pick the first item on the shelf. I always, at least, pick the second one, behind the first one, lol.

    1. Shannon, me too 🙂

  60. Right now, where we grocery shop we currently have people who take out our groceries for us, and then take the cart back. They do the work for tips. It’s really great since by the end of a grocery trip, if I have kids with me, both of them are usually in meltdown mode.
But I’m sure when we move in a month, I’ll be doing the same thing with carts.

    1. Brittani! How lovely that they take your groceries to your car!!

  61. Nikhila

I don’t go for grocery shopping much. It’s always my mom who does it. So, no grocery confessions yet. Tho I enjoyed reading it. Good one.

    1. Thanks Nikhila 🙂

  62. I’m dying laughing because I do ALL of these without a second thought! LOL!

    1. thanks Kanani! 🙂

  63. I do my grocery shopping online to avoid my biggest vice, buying stuff that I do not need. I am such an impulsive shopper

    1. Thats such a smart idea Nicki!! I bet you save a ton of money!! 🙂

  64. I NEVER take food from the edge of the shelf, always a few back. I figure everyone has had their hands all over the ones in front. And I ALWAYS return my cart. 🙂

  65. Oh I am totally the type who tells the sample guy I will be buying the product. I just can’t say no to their faces 😬

  66. This is too funny! Speaking of.. I need to go to the grocery store….

    1. hahaha Malina!! 🙂

  67. riley

This post was so cute and honest. I love it!!

    1. Thanks Riley 🙂

  68. My grocery store confession is that I hate them with passion! Unless is an emergency and I need something right then i try to go in! I waste so much time everytime I go! I would rather pay somebody else to do my shopping or I shop whenever I can online and have it shipped or order online and pick up in the store so it doesn’t take that long

  69. Hannah

Shopping with kids is always interesting. We have had many grocery tantrums haha

  70. I love how honest this post and truth to be told, I’m the same as you too haha #noshame Thanks for sharing dear!

    1. Aww.. thanks Tina!! 🙂

  71. Oh my goodness these posts are hilarious!! I am totally a pusher-to-the-side-of-the-cart’er too!

  72. So funny! Sometimes I go to the “express lane”, even though I know I have more that items. If it is a “two for one ” sales item in my cart, I think to myself it really only counts as one item in this situation.

    1. LOL Nicole!! I love your reasoning! 🙂

  73. My grocery store confession would be that I always forget to go grocery shopping so I end up picking up stuff here and there at the weirdest places lol.

  74. – I’m a cart judger – This made me laugh so hard. But trust me darling, we all are.

  75. I love the honesty! I am the same way about the samples people! I feel less guilt about not buying the product now that I have a toddler with me that they are keeping satisfied and fed!

  76. Haha these are great. I’m totally the mom with the Oreos *and* the boxed cereal and I’m religious about returning carts haha. Isn’t it funny how different things affect people? I also am too indulgent with the yeses for candy or random treats when I have my kids- luckily I don’t have to take them every time!

    1. Hi Jamie! I’m so glad you loved the post 🙂
